The Ass and His Masters

         



        Once upon a time , a herb seller lived in a village. He owned an ass which he used for his business. The man often went to the nearby city markets to sell his herbs. He loaded his pack of herbs on the back of the ass. The animal was not happy with his master as he gave him little food to eat and overburdened him with loads. Moreover, he felt that his master never paid attention to him.

        The disappointed ass made a petition to Jupiter to be released from his present service and to be provided with another master. "I pray you send me another master, because this master uses me only for loading his goods," complained the ass, "he hardly cares for me." "Well, I will grant your wish if it so pleases you," said Jupiter, "but make sure you are satisfied with your new master."

        Jupiter fulfilled the desire of the ass. The animal was sold to a tile maker. After a short while, the ass realized that his new work was even harder than the earlier one. He now had to carry heavier loads to the brick field. "Ah! This is too much for a poor animal like me," cried the ass, " I can't continue here."

        So, the ass went to Jupiter and petitioned for yet another change of master. "Well, considering this as your last request I agree to grant it, " said Jupiter. Now the ass was sold to a tanner. After working with the tanner for a few days the ass felt he was in worse hands. He repented for his earlier mistakes. 

        "It would have been better to have been starved or overworked by my earlier masters than to have been bought by my present master who will not spare me even after my death. Once I am dead, he will tan my hide and use it for his profit," lamented the ass.

Moral: He who finds discontentment in one place is not likely to find happiness in another.

"Ah!" said the fly, "the honey looks so tasty and smells good too. I must try it out." Overjoyed to find an open honey jar, the fly soon started to lick the honey.
